Subaru models have a certain look and feel to them. It’s one that often conjures up images of a hatchback like the 2017 Subaru Outback traversing the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. And while that imagery isn’t wrong, it also isn’t the only thing that the Subaru brand is capable of doing. It’s true that there hasn’t been a full-sized Subaru model on the market since 2014, but now that’s all about to change, and this new concept vehicle manages to mix the rustic Subaru model feel with something fresh and enticing.
The Subaru Ascent, a three-row SUV, debuted at the New York Auto Show. While technically still a concept, the Subaru Ascent looks promising and could be the perfect vehicle for larger families. It features large boomerang headlamps surrounding a massive grille, a stout body, and definitive lines. It follows the Subaru Viziv-7 concept that we saw last year. It’s a full-size SUV, complete with three rows, but that doesn’t stop it from looking lean and graceful.
Like most new Subaru cars, the Subaru Ascent will feature all-wheel drive and an upgraded engine. It’s a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine with direct injection. The word on horsepower and torque aren’t out just yet, but we’re confident that the numbers will live up to the speculation. We also believe that it will feature the classic continuously variable transmission which compliments the comprehensive all-wheel drive system.
Inside the concept vehicle shown off at the auto show was a white and brown leather interior and many touchscreens that control everything down to the windows. If you look closely, it appears to be a larger version of the new and highly successful 2017 Subaru Impreza. The automaker hasn’t announced yet when it will unveil the production model of the Subaru Ascent, but if it’s anything like the comprehensive concept we’ve seen, this seven-passenger SUV will be hard to beat.
